What is RPL?
Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessment that allows TMLE to award credit or transfer credit to a module or number of modules prior to the commencement of studies.
What is Credit Transfer?
Credit Transfer involves the examination of a previously completed course or subject to assess whether it provides equivalent learning or competency outcomes to those required in the students course of study. It is based on agreements between institutions or organisations as to the credit value to be given to a specific unit of competency and learning outcome within a course or qualification.
To achieve RPL the candidate will have undertaken an equivalent or higher qualification than the module in question. All assessments are done in line with the stipulations as set out in the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).
Any submission regarding RPL will fulfil the following criteria:
- The candidate must possess the necessary knowledge to perform the required competencies
- The candidate must possess the necessary skills to perform the required competencies
- The candidate must produce validated evidence proving that they have the knowledge and skills to fulfil the required competencies
- All materials submitted must be valid to within 7 years i.e. no qualification older than 7 years will be accepted
What is the benefit of applying for RPL?
Completing and RPL application will:
- Provide recognition of your work experience and previous study
- Reduce formal face to face training time
How Does the RPL Process Work?
- Fill out an enrolment form and RPL application form including all relevant information, certificates or other identifying materials
- Submit the forms with the initial, $550 submission fee. This fee applies to all RPL applications and must be paid prior to material being assessed by a TMLE representative
- The applicant will then receive an RPL report indicating which units of study have been successful and are then recognised as prior learning
- The applicant will then be charged half the price of the unit of study, for the unit, which has been classified as recognised prior learning. All other units of study will be charged at the normal rate.
The rates for RPL and units of study are indicated below:
Certificate IV Local Government (Regulatory Services) RPL Pricing Table:
| Number of Units for RPL (A) | Cost of Individual RPL Units | Number of Units to be Studied in Full (B) | Cost of Individual, Full Units of Study | Total Cost of Study | RPL Application Fee (C) | Equation |
| 1 | $160 | 11 | $320 | $3,680 | $550 | A+B+C = $4,230 |
| 2 | $160 | 10 | $320 | $3,520 | $550 | A+B+C = $4,070 |
| 3 | $160 | 9 | $320 | $3,360 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,910 |
| 4 | $160 | 8 | $320 | $3,200 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,750 |
| 5 | $160 | 7 | $320 | $3,040 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,590 |
| 6 | $160 | 6 | $320 | $2,880 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,430 |
| 7 | $160 | 5 | $320 | $2,720 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,270 |
| 8 | $160 | 4 | $320 | $2,560 | $550 | A+B+C = $3,110 |
| 9 | $160 | 3 | $320 | $2,400 | $550 | A+B+C = $2,950 |
| 10 | $160 | 2 | $320 | $2,240 | $550 | A+B+C = $2,790 |
| 11 | $160 | 1 | $320 | $2,080 | $550 | A+B+C = $2,630 |
| 12 | $160 | 0 | $320 | $1,920 | $550 | A+B+C = $2,470 |
Example: A student wishes to receive RPL for five units of study. The cost of completing the entire course is calculated as follows:
5 x RPL units which equates to: 5 x $160 = $800
7 x Standard units which equates to: 7 X $320 = $2,240
1 x Application fee, which equates to: $550
Total cost of course = $800 + $2,240 + $550 = $3,590

If the applicant is successful in obtaining RPL for a unit the statement for attainment for that unit will be granted at half the normal price of the unit. All other units are to be paid for at the usual rate as per the table above.
